Overview
I am a Lecturer in Hispanic Studies (E&S) and an ASPIRE Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
I originally joined the Languages, Cultures and Visual Studies Department in 2008 as a PhD candidate and Postgraduate Teaching Assistant. In 2012 I completed my PhD thesis: Beyond Words: A Multimodal Approach to Translation Applied to Global Standardised Advertising Campaigns in International Women's Magazines.
I am the translation Coordinator, producer and lead the education strand of the CartasVivas project, directed by Professor Nuria Capdevila-Argüelles. https://cartasvivas.org/
In December 2023 I was awarded a Global Exeter Innovation Fund to develop a partnership with the Complutense University Madrid through a Global Classrooms project in module MLS3037 Women and Feminism in 20th Century Spain.
Education Incubator Fellow 2020/21. I led the project 'Cartasvivas: A Multimodal Project-Based Learning Approach in Modern Languages'.
Research
Transcreation. I specialise in Transcreation covering various interdisciplinary fields including linguistics, advertising, visual and intercultural studies.
Gender stereotypes in global advertising. I explore the presence and portrayal of women in international advertising and how both discourse and visual features are used to target women and construct and reinforce global gender stereotypes. I investigate the applicability of feminist translation strategies in commercial messages.
The use of translation in language teaching and learning. I am particularly interested in this area, always researching new ideas to incorporate into my seminars.

Supervision
I am a Visiting Lecturer (tutor and dissertation supervisor/marker) for the MA Translation Studies (Distance Learning) at the University of Birmingham since 2017.
I have also carried out supervision work for the MA in Translation at Exeter and for the MA in Translating Popular Culture (Audiovisual Translation) at City University London.

Teaching
I teach Spanish oral, grammar, writing skills and translation (into Spanish) classes to undergraduate students (Year 1, 2 and 4) in the Hispanic Unit. At a postgraduate level, I teach research-led modules in the MA Translation and supervise dissertations.
I also co-convene and teach culture modules: MLS3037 Women and Feminism in 20th Century Spain and MLS1164, a Journey of Discovery: Hispanic Global Culture.
2014-2018 I successfully co-ran with Dr. Richard Mansell the extra-curricular Translation Business Project for Humanities undergraduate and postgraduate students. The purpose of the project was to help students build and improve transferable intercultural, linguistic and entrepreneurial skills to develop their employability attributes. In 2018 I won Best Feedback Provider at the University of Exeter Teaching Awards.

Biography
I graduated from the University of Zaragoza in 2002 with a degree in Filología Inglesa (English Linguistics and Literature) and then completed a Teacher Training course (equivalent to PGCE). I hold an MA with Distinction in Applied Translation and a PhD in Translation Studies from the University of Exeter.
