'Paris je t'aime': Writing the City (MLF2071)

Paris is the city of lights, of romance, but also of sin and indulgence. Writers, intellectuals, lovers and artists across the centuries have been drawn there to find their muse, seek inspiration and intoxication. This module invites you to explore a range of modern written accounts of the city, in French and English, from the interwar years up to the present. From novels to cultural commentary, historical accounts and memoirs, you will compare attitudes, points of view and perspectives in fiction and non-fiction, building up your own critical account of the city’s enduring appeal.
