Dictatorships on Display: History Exhibitions in Germany and Austria (MLG3036)
15 credits
This module allows you to explore areas of German and Austrian history – National Socialism, Jewish culture, and East Germany – through a study of objects rather than the more conventional documents. While the horrors of dictatorship and their difficult legacies form the background to the exhibitions discussed, the module also celebrates the creativity, professionalism, and community activitism which go into creating history exhibitions in Germany and Austria today. You can come to the module with different backgrounds and interests: German studies, history, cultural memory, museum or heritage studies, visual arts, or Holocaust studies. It is not necessary to have German language skills, but curiosity about Germany and Austria is a must.
