China and the Third World: Foreign Relations and Nation Building in China in the Cold War Era (MLM3011)

The module aims to provide you with a new perspective in understanding the making of the People’s Republic of China’s foreign policy. It will address key issues such as the PRC’s participation in wars in Asia, its role in the Afro-Asian Movement, Sino-Taiwanese relations, the Sino-Soviet split, and Beijing’s admission to the UN. In addition to exploring major events in the PRC during the Cold War, this module will also engage with the relationship between PRC foreign policy and its domestic nation building concern. The primary materials discussed in this course will include PRC propaganda posters, official documents, music, literature, and film.
