Languages in a Global World Event 2021: Professor Janice Kay in conversation with Susannah Poulton

Government International Trade Adviser Susannah Poulton will discuss her career helping businesses sell and operate around the world at a University of Exeter event.

Susannah, who works for the Department for International Trade, studied Spanish and German at the University of Exeter. The event is part of the Languages in a Global World series, designed to show the opportunities available through studying languages.

Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of Exeter, Professor Lisa Roberts will introduce Susannah, who will then be in conversation with Provost and Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Janice Kay. The conversation will be followed by a Q&A chaired by Professor Sally Faulkner, Assistant Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Europe) and Professor of Hispanic and Film Studies. Questions will be submitted by school students in advance of the event.

Susannah said: “I’m delighted to take part in this event. Learning languages and communicating across cultures has been vital during my career and I know it is an essential skillset for the next generation. I applaud the University of Exeter for their campaign”

Susannah is works with East of England Life Sciences, supporting and advising companies on future international growth plans.

Professor Faulkner said: “In current times, it is critically important that we show young people the many doors that languages can open - personally, culturally and professionally. The 'Languages in a Global World' series does precisely this, with our speaker this year particularly focussed on the benefits of studying Spanish and German, and the advantages that linguistic knowledge and inter-cultural skills bring in a business career.”
