Translating Museums for People with Learning Disabilities: Introducing Easyread

10:30 - 11:30

How can museums help people with learning difficulties to get the most out of their visit? One answer is to provide texts in Easyread, a simplified form of English that combines texts and images.

Professor Chloe Paver from the University of Exeter shows us how professional writers can ‘translate’ standard English into Easyread but for the best results people with learning difficulties are involved at every stage.

Translating Clothing

Curator Tony Eccles teams up with language specialists from the University of Exeter to explore the hidden codes in the museum’s textile collection. Join them for tour of the World Cultures gallery, followed by an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the ethnography store as they interpret signs of identity in fashion from cultures all over the globe.
